Peru Cajamarca BIO
Price range: 4.45 € through 31.92 € excl. VAT
Peruvian arabica from the renowned Sol y Café cooperative, located in the mountainous Cajamarca region.
Peru is known, among other things, for its breathtaking views of Machu Picchu and one of the highest-altitude railways in the world – the Central Transandean Railway, built by Polish engineer Ernest Malinowski. The country is also one of the world’s largest coffee producers and, at the same time, the largest producer of organic coffee. This is largely due to geographical factors – Peru is a mountainous country, its farms are situated on hillsides and tend to be rather small. There is no room for large industrial plantations, which means farmers must focus on quality over quantity. Add to that a warm and rainy climate and fertile soils, and you have an excellent terroir for growing coffee.
The coffee we offer comes from the Sol y Café cooperative, founded in 2008 and located in the city of Jaén in the mountainous Cajamarca region. The area is characterized by warm days and cool, clear nights. These temperature fluctuations slow down the growth of the coffee plant, which is highly desirable – it results in beans that are more developed and aromatic. Sol y Café consists of 59 local organizations bringing together approximately 1,000 farmers, 10% of whom are women. Cooperative members jointly shape many agronomic and economic decisions, participate in training programs, and have access to health insurance. The Sol y Café cooperative holds Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade, and Organic certifications.
Peru Cajamarca is an arabica with a fruity-floral aroma, sweet acidity, and delicate notes of hazelnut and milk chocolate. We roast it at a medium level by default, which works beautifully with alternative and pour-over brewing methods – but feel free to order full kilograms in a Viennese roast for espresso. You won’t be disappointed.
